How vehicle licence duty is worked out in WA
Stamp duty on a car in Western Australia is called vehicle licence duty. RevenueWA charges it when a car is first registered and every time the registration moves to a new owner, private sale or dealer. For a used car, duty is on its market value, which for an ordinary sale between strangers is the price paid, including any trade-in and accessories sold with the car, GST included. A sale to a relative or a gift is charged on the market value.
| Dutiable value | Duty |
|---|---|
| Up to $25,000 | 2.75% of the whole value |
| Over $25,000 up to $50,000 | 2.75% plus 1 percentage point for every $6,666.66 over $25,000, on the whole value |
| Over $50,000 | 6.5% of the whole value |
Between $25,000 and $50,000 the rate rises with the value: it is worked out to two decimal places and applied to the whole value, and the duty is rounded down to the nearest 5 cents. Electric and hybrid cars pay the same as any other car.
