How motor vehicle duty is worked out in NSW

Revenue NSW charges it when a car is first registered and every time the registration moves to a new owner, private sale or dealer. Duty is on the higher of the price paid and the car's market value, GST included, with dealer delivery and accessories but not an extended warranty, rego or CTP. The buyer and the seller each declare the market value, and an undervalued car attracts interest and penalty tax.

Up to $45,000$3 per $100 or part of $100 of the whole value
Over $45,000$1,350 plus $5 per $100 or part of $100 over $45,000

The higher rate applies only to the part of the value over $45,000. Electric and hybrid cars pay the same as any other car: the electric car exemption ended on 31 December 2023. Utes and vans that are not passenger vehicles pay $3 per $100 on the whole value.

Questions about stamp duty in NSW

How much is stamp duty on a $30,000 car in NSW?

$900 for a used car (up to $45,000: $3 per $100 or part of $100 of the whole value). With the transfer fee of $42 and about $375 for 12 months' rego, that is about $1,317 on top of the price.

Is motor vehicle duty worked out on the price or the market value?

Duty is on the higher of the price paid and the car's market value, GST included, with dealer delivery and accessories but not an extended warranty, rego or CTP. The buyer and the seller each declare the market value, and an undervalued car attracts interest and penalty tax.

When do you pay motor vehicle duty in NSW?

When the registration is transferred, which costs the least within 14 days of buying the car. Service NSW collects the duty with the transfer fee.

Do electric cars pay stamp duty in NSW?

Yes. In NSW an electric car pays motor vehicle duty at the same rates as any other car.

How much is rego in NSW?

About $375 for 12 months for a private car of 1,151 to 1,500 kg tare, less the $100 private vehicle discount on renewals. CTP insurance (the green slip) is bought separately from an insurer and is not included. Motor vehicle tax goes by the car's tare weight. A car over 5 years old also needs a safety check (pink slip, up to $52) before each renewal.

Does a dealer's price include stamp duty?

A dealer's "drive away" price includes the duty, the transfer and the rego. A price marked "excl. government charges" does not, and neither does a private seller's price: the buyer pays the duty when the registration is transferred.
