How motor vehicle duty is worked out in VIC
Stamp duty on a car in Victoria is called motor vehicle duty. State Revenue Office Victoria charges it when a car is first registered and every time the registration moves to a new owner, private sale or dealer. Duty is on the higher of the price paid and the car's market value, including GST and anything fitted to the car. The State Revenue Office checks the value against a motor industry valuation guide.
Green cars (CO2 of 120 g/km or less)
| Dutiable value | Duty |
|---|---|
| Any value | $8.40 per $200 or part of $200 of the whole value |
Other passenger cars
| Dutiable value | Duty |
|---|---|
| Up to $80,809 | $8.40 per $200 or part of $200 of the whole value |
| Over $80,809 up to $100,000 | $10.40 per $200 or part of $200 of the whole value |
| Over $100,000 up to $150,000 | $14 per $200 or part of $200 of the whole value |
| Over $150,000 | $18 per $200 or part of $200 of the whole value |
Up to $80,809 is the 2026-27 luxury car tax threshold. Primary producers pay the lowest rate at any value.
A green car, one whose model emits 120 g/km of CO2 or less (every electric car does), pays the lowest rate whatever its value. Find the figure for a model on the Green Vehicle Guide.
Each rate applies to the whole value, so a car just over a threshold pays the higher rate on all of it. The same rates apply to new and used cars.
Source: State Revenue Office Victoria, as at 27 October 2026. State Revenue Office Victoria's own duty calculator gives the official figure. The rates are set in the Duties Act 2000. The luxury threshold moves every 1 July with the federal luxury car tax threshold.
