How vehicle registration duty is worked out in QLD
Stamp duty on a car in Queensland is called vehicle registration duty. Queensland Revenue Office charges it when a car is first registered and every time the registration moves to a new owner, private sale or dealer. For a used car, duty is on the higher of the total paid, including any trade-in, dealer delivery and warranties, and the car's market value, GST included.
Hybrid or electric
| Dutiable value | Duty |
|---|---|
| Up to $100,000 | $2 per $100 or part of $100 of the whole value |
| Over $100,000 | $4 per $100 or part of $100 of the whole value |
1 to 4 cylinders
| Dutiable value | Duty |
|---|---|
| Up to $100,000 | $3 per $100 or part of $100 of the whole value |
| Over $100,000 | $5 per $100 or part of $100 of the whole value |
Also 2 rotors or steam.
5 or 6 cylinders
| Dutiable value | Duty |
|---|---|
| Up to $100,000 | $3.50 per $100 or part of $100 of the whole value |
| Over $100,000 | $5.50 per $100 or part of $100 of the whole value |
Also 3 rotors.
7 or more cylinders
| Dutiable value | Duty |
|---|---|
| Up to $100,000 | $4 per $100 or part of $100 of the whole value |
| Over $100,000 | $6 per $100 or part of $100 of the whole value |
The rate depends on the engine: hybrids (with any number of cylinders) and electric cars pay the least. Each rate applies to the whole value, so a car just over $100,000 pays the higher rate on all of it.
Source: Queensland Revenue Office, as at 27 October 2026. Queensland Revenue Office's own duty calculator gives the official figure. The rates are set in the Duties Act 2001 and are not indexed; the over $100,000 rates have applied since 1 July 2018.
