How motor vehicle duty is worked out in ACT

Stamp duty on a car in the Australian Capital Territory is called motor vehicle duty. ACT Revenue Office charges it when a car is first registered and every time the registration moves to a new owner, private sale or dealer. Duty is on the higher of the price paid and the car's market value, including GST, dealer delivery and accessories, less any extended warranty.

Zero-emission cars (electric or hydrogen)

Dutiable valueDuty
Up to $45,000$2.50 per $100 or part of $100 of the whole value
Over $45,000 up to $80,000$1,125 plus $4 per $100 or part of $100 over $45,000
Over $80,000$2,525 plus $8 per $100 or part of $100 over $80,000

Other cars, until 31 January 2027

Over $80,000$3,393.50 plus $8 per $100 or part of $100 over $80,000

Petrol, diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars, whatever their CO2 rating.

Other cars, from 1 February 2027

Already announced: the calculator switches to these rates on that day.

Dutiable valueDuty
Up to $45,000$3.72 per $100 or part of $100 of the whole value
Over $45,000 up to $80,000$1,674 plus $6.44 per $100 or part of $100 over $45,000
Over $80,000$3,928 plus $8 per $100 or part of $100 over $80,000

For a used car only one thing changes the duty: whether it is a zero-emission car (battery electric or hydrogen). The CO2 rating sets the duty only on new cars, but it does set the yearly rego. Used electric and hybrid cars lost their duty exemption on 1 September 2025.

Source: ACT Revenue Office, as at 27 October 2026. ACT Revenue Office's own duty calculator gives the official figure. The rates are set by ministerial determination and change on irregular dates: 1 July 2025, 1 September 2025 and next on 1 February 2027, already in this table.
