How motor vehicle duty is worked out in TAS

Stamp duty on a car in Tasmania is called motor vehicle duty. State Revenue Office Tasmania charges it when a car is first registered and every time the registration moves to a new owner, private sale or dealer. For a used car, duty is on the higher of the price paid, including any trade-in, and the car's market value. At an auction the buyer's premium and fees count as part of the price.

Up to $600$20 flat
Over $600 up to $35,000$3 per $100 or part of $100 of the whole value

Electric and hydrogen cars no longer have a duty exemption: it ended on 30 June 2023. The same bands apply to new and used passenger cars; utes and panel vans pay a different rate.
