How to read a BMW VIN

Take a 2019 BMW 3 Series. Its VIN starts WBA5R12, and those seven characters are the useful part. The rest is unique to one car, so it's painted out here.

3 Series (G20) · VIN plate

  1. Characters 1 to 3: Maker and country
  2. Characters 4 to 7: Type code: model, body and engine
  3. Character 8: Not needed to identify the model
  4. Character 9: Check digit, as on a US car
  5. Character 10: Not the model year on a BMW
  6. Characters 11 to 17: Plant and serial number

Characters 1 to 7

Maker, country and a type code for each engine and body. The 3 Series alone has 185 patterns.

Characters 9 and 10

Character 9 is a check digit, valid on 99.9% of the BMWs we checked. Character 10 is not the year: read as one, it lands within a year of the build year on only 2.2% of 6,370 BMWs, less often than chance.

Characters 11 to 17

Plant and serial number. BMW uses these last seven as a short VIN. Unique to one car, so never shown.

US decoders read the 10th character as the model year. In September 2026 we checked 6,370 BMWs against their build dates. Even allowing a year either way, it matched only 2.2% of the time, less often than guessing would. The build date is on the build plate, and in every Carify VIN check.

3 Series VIN patterns

Each engine and body of the 3 Series has its own type code in characters 4 to 7, 185 in all. These are the most common.
