How to read a Nissan VIN

Take a 2018 Nissan Navara. Its VIN starts MNTCB4D23, and those nine characters are the useful part. Characters 7 to 9 spell its chassis code, D23. The rest is unique to one car, so it's painted out here.

  1. Characters 1 to 3: Maker and country
  2. Characters 4 to 6: Engine, body and other details
  3. Characters 7 to 9: Chassis code: D23 is this Navara
  4. Character 10: Not the model year on a Nissan
  5. Characters 11 to 17: Plant and serial number

Characters 1 to 9

Maker, country, details and, in characters 7 to 9, the chassis code Nissan gives each generation: D22, D40 and D23 for the Navara, Y61 and Y62 for the Patrol.

Characters 9 and 10

On a US car, a check digit and the model year. On a Nissan, character 9 is the end of the chassis code, and character 10 is not the year: of the 11,304 Nissans we checked, it came within a year of the build year on only 17.6%.

Characters 11 to 17

Plant and serial number. Unique to one car, so never shown.

The year is on the build plate, not in the VIN

US decoders read the 10th character as the model year. In October 2026 we checked 11,304 Nissans against their build dates. Even allowing a year either way, it matched only 17.6% of the time. The build date is on the build plate, and in every Carify VIN check.

Navara VIN patterns

Characters 7 to 9 spell the Navara chassis code, and characters 4 to 6 change with the engine and body, so it has 72 patterns. These are the most common.

About these numbers: generations and build years come from 11,304 Nissans decoded from factory records, one per VIN. Build years show the middle 90% of each pattern, and patterns with fewer than 30 decoded cars are left out. Updated October 2026.
