How to read a Holden VIN
Take a 2010 Commodore. Its VIN starts 6G1EK, and those five characters are the useful part: 6G1 is Holden in Australia, and EK a VE Commodore. Character 10 adds the model year, an A for 2010. The rest is unique to one car, so it's painted out here.
Commodore (VE) · VIN plate
- Characters 1 to 3: Maker and country (6G1 is Holden, Australia)
- Characters 4 and 5: Model and series
- Characters 6 to 8: More vehicle details
- Character 9: A check digit only on Holdens built here from the VY on
- Character 10: Model year
- Characters 11 to 17: Plant and serial number
Characters 1 to 5
Maker, country, model and series. 6G1 is a Holden built in Australia; KL3 one built in Korea, MMU one from Thailand and W0L one from Germany.
Characters 9 and 10
Character 10 is the model year: within a year of the build year on 99% of the 12,764 Holdens we checked. Character 9 is a check digit on Holdens built here from the VY Commodore on (6G1), but not on older or most imported ones, so it checked out on 58% of them.
Characters 11 to 17
Plant and serial number. Unique to one car, so never shown.
The VIN gives the model year, not the build date
On a Holden, the 10th character is the model year, the same as on a US car. In October 2026 we checked 12,764 Holdens against their build dates, and it was within a year of the build year on 99% of them. The model year is not the build date, though: that is on the build plate, and in every Carify VIN check.
Commodore VIN patterns
On a VT or VX, characters 4 and 5 spell the series. From the VY on, character 4 is the series' last letter: Y, Z, E and F. These are the Commodore's most common patterns.

About these numbers: generations and build years come from 12,764 Holdens decoded from factory records, one per VIN. Build years show the middle 90% of each pattern, and patterns with fewer than 30 decoded cars are left out. Updated October 2026.
