How stamp duty is worked out in SA

RevenueSA charges it when a car is first registered and every time the registration moves to a new owner, private sale or dealer. For a used car, duty is on the higher of the price paid and the car's market value, GST included. A trade-in or a friendly price cannot be taken off.

Dutiable valueDuty
Up to $1,000$1 per $100 or part of $100 of the whole value
Over $1,000 up to $2,000$10 plus $2 per $100 or part of $100 over $1,000
Over $2,000 up to $3,000$30 plus $3 per $100 or part of $100 over $2,000
Over $3,000$60 plus $4 per $100 or part of $100 over $3,000

Minimum duty $5.

These are the rates for passenger cars, wagons and SUVs; utes and vans pay a lower commercial rate above $2,000. Electric and hybrid cars pay the same as any other car.
