What is the PPSR?
The Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) is a national online database managed by the Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA). It records security interests in personal property — including vehicles, boats, machinery, and other goods.
Think of it as a central system that helps buyers confirm whether a car is:
- Under finance or encumbered (meaning money is still owed)
- Previously written off or stolen
- Part of a commercial security agreement or loan
What is a PPSR Check?
A PPSR check is a search of the register that gives you a detailed snapshot of a vehicle’s financial and legal status. It’s based on the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), and it generates a certificate showing:
- If the car has existing finance
- If it’s ever been reported stolen
- If it’s written off due to damage
- Registration details
- PPSR registration date and expiry
You’ll also receive an official PPSR certificate — a PDF that serves as your legal protection if you purchase the car after the check is done.
Why is a PPSR Check Important?
Here’s why doing a PPSR check is essential before buying a used car:
1. Avoid buying a financed vehicle
If you buy a car with money still owing on it, the lender can legally repossess it — even if you're the new owner.
2. Protect yourself against stolen property
The PPSR will flag if a vehicle has been reported stolen in any Australian state or territory.
3. Check for previous write-offs
Written-off vehicles can still be sold if repaired — but you have the right to know if they’ve been in serious accidents or damage incidents.
What’s Included in a PPSR Certificate?
Your PPSR Certificate will show:
- Encumbrance status
- Write-off details
- Stolen vehicle check
- Vehicle details: make, model, year, VIN, engine number
- Date and time the check was completed
This certificate acts as proof that you did your due diligence at the time of purchase.
When Should You Do a PPSR Check?
You should perform a PPSR check right before you buy a used car — ideally on the same day you make the payment. This ensures the certificate reflects the latest information and legally protects you in case of future disputes.
