Money owing and write-offs on the CX-30

13% had money owing
35% were recorded as written off

Of about 130 used Mazda CX-30 checked on Carify since November 2023. Every car checked: 9% had money owing and 13% were written off.

These are cars people chose to check before buying, so they are not a share of every CX-30 on the road. Money owing is what was registered against the car on the day it was checked.

The CX-30 (DM) is a small SUV built on the BP Mazda3 platform and sold here since late 2019. Engines are the 2.0 SkyActiv-G (G20, 114 kW), the 2.5 SkyActiv-G (G25, 139 kW, with cylinder deactivation) and, in some upper grades, the SkyActiv-X (X20) mild hybrid; a G20e M Hybrid was added later. Nearly all have a six-speed auto, in front-drive or i-Activ AWD. The CX-30 is still young, and its mechanical record so far is good, with no widely reported engine or gearbox failures. Most owner complaints concern electrics, driver-assist calibration, infotainment and cabin noises, and several are shared with the BP Mazda3.

Flat battery and low battery warnings (all, 2019 to 2024)

Several owners report a 12-volt battery that went flat within a couple of years, or a car that would not start after sitting, sometimes more than once. On the closely related BP Mazda3, warnings and overnight drain are often blamed on modules not shutting down, and dealers have applied body control module software updates; switching off without applying the electric park brake is also reported to keep some systems awake. US owner complaints list battery drain as the most-reported CX-30 fault for 2021 cars. A replacement stop-start battery is roughly $250 to $450.

Over-eager Smart Brake Support and radar cruise (all, 2019 to 2024)

Driver-assist calibration is a common theme in owner reviews: radar cruise braking hard when a car merges ahead, collision warnings for objects that are not a threat, and lane-keep alerts that are too sensitive. Low sun can also blind the camera. The closely related 2019 BP Mazda3 was recalled to reprogram Smart Brake Support after false detections that could slow or stop the car unexpectedly. Ask a dealer to confirm the latest software is loaded. Under warranty this costs nothing; outside it, a diagnostic and update is roughly $150 to $300.

Infotainment and connectivity glitches (Mazda Connect, 2019 to 2024)

The Mazda Connect system is run from a rotary dial rather than by touch, and owners report weak voice recognition, satnav software bugs, dropouts in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and occasional system shutdowns. Many issues respond to software updates or a system reset. Hardware faults are rarer; a replacement unit out of warranty is likely a four-figure job.

Cylinder deactivation vibration and lifter tick (G25, 2019 to 2024)

The G25 shuts down two cylinders at light load to save fuel. A few owners report a vibration at light-throttle cruising speeds when it switches modes, while others notice nothing. On the BP Mazda3, which uses the same engine, a tick at idle from the hydraulic lifters on cylinders one and four is reported. A brief tick at start-up is normal, but one that persists once warm may need a software update or new lifters, a labour-heavy job of roughly $1,000 to $2,500 out of warranty.

Cabin rattles and soft paint (all, 2019 to 2024)

Owners report buzzes and squeaks from the dash and B-pillars, the latter often from the seatbelt height adjuster rubbing its trim, plus rear suspension noises. Dealers often fix rattles with felt tape or foam. Owners also say the paint and piano-black trim mark and chip easily, including the popular Soul Red. Paint correction or touch-up is roughly $200 to $600; a panel respray costs more.

Recalls and safety

CX-30 recall themes include cars sold from January 2020 to February 2021 whose power tailgate could partly lower when parked facing uphill in hot weather, risking injury to anyone at the boot. The BP Mazda3, which shares its engines and electronics, was recalled in 2019 for false Smart Brake Support activation and a 2.5 cylinder deactivation software fault, so it is worth having a dealer confirm the CX-30's software is current. Ask a Mazda dealer to check the VIN for open recalls, and see our recalls page.

Buying a used Mazda CX-30? What to check

  • Battery: Ask whether the battery has been replaced or the car has needed flat battery callouts, and watch for low battery messages at start-up.
  • Driver assists: On the test drive, use radar cruise in traffic and watch for hard, unexplained braking or false warnings.
  • Infotainment: Pair your phone, run CarPlay or Android Auto, enter a navigation address and check the system stays stable.
  • Idle and cruise: On a G25, listen at idle once warm for persistent ticking, and feel for vibration at a steady light-throttle cruise.
  • Rattles: Drive on rough roads with the audio off and listen around the B-pillars and dash.
  • Paint: Inspect the bonnet and front bumper for chips, and check that panels match in colour, which can reveal repairs.
  • Tailgate: Open the power tailgate fully on a slope and make sure it holds.
  • Service history: Check servicing is on time against the logbook and ask which software updates the dealer has applied.

The verdict

Any CX-30 with a full service record is a sound buy, as the engines and gearbox have no widely reported faults so far. The G25 is the best all-rounder, with noticeably more pace; the G20 suits city driving. Our 2021 CX-30 page covers one of the most common years. The X20 and M Hybrid versions are rarer and more complex, with little long-term data, so a complete dealer history matters more on those. Whatever the engine, test the battery, driver assists and infotainment, as that is where most problems show up.
