Money owing and write-offs on the Mazda 2
Of about 770 used Mazda 2 checked on Carify since November 2023. Every car checked: 9% had money owing and 13% were written off.
These are cars people chose to check before buying, so they are not a share of every Mazda 2 on the road. Money owing is what was registered against the car on the day it was checked.
Check a Mazda 2 for money owing and write-offsThe Mazda2 is Mazda's light hatch, also sold as a sedan in some years. Three generations cover the used market: the DY (2002 to 2007), the DE (2007 to 2014) and the DJ hatch from late 2014, joined by the DL sedan in 2015. DY and DE cars use the 1.5-litre ZY-VE petrol (76 kW in the DE) with a five-speed manual or four-speed auto. The DJ moved to a 1.5 SkyActiv-G with a six-speed manual or six-speed auto, and a 2017 update added more safety gear and G-Vectoring Control. The Mazda2 has one of the best reliability reputations among light cars, and many owners report well over 150,000 km with few faults. Most problems are age-related wear and electrical niggles.
Idle dips and stalling (1.5 ZY-VE, DY and DE, 2002 to 2014)
A dirty throttle body is the usual suspect for an idle that dips sharply before recovering, or a car that stalls as it comes to a stop. The throttle needs to pass a little air even when closed, and carbon blocks that passage. Cleaning the throttle body, sometimes followed by an idle relearn, usually fixes it, roughly $100 to $250. Some early DY cars are also reported to have had erratic power delivery that was cured by reprogramming the engine computer. If a warning light is on, scan for codes first, as a faulty sensor can cause the same symptoms.
Rear wheel bearing noise and hub corrosion (DE, 2007 to 2014)
A drone or rumble from the rear that rises with road speed usually means worn rear wheel bearings, an age-related job on older DE cars. In the UK, Mazda ran a service action for hub bearing corrosion on some early DE builds. Replacement is roughly $250 to $500 per side fitted, depending on parts.
Harsh or slipping automatic shifts (four-speed DY and DE, six-speed DJ, 2002 to 2019)
Some owners report jerky shifts, delayed engagement or an auto that flares or slips, and some DJ owners report software reprogramming to cure it. Mazda's schedule has generally not called for auto fluid changes, but some specialists advise changing it around every 50,000 km, using genuine Mazda ATF. A fluid service is roughly $200 to $400; a valve body repair or a replacement gearbox runs to several thousand dollars, often more than an older DY or DE is worth.
Air conditioning faults (DE and DJ, 2007 to 2019)
Some owners of both later generations report air conditioning that stops blowing cold. On the DE, the reported causes include low refrigerant, compressor seals that dry out when the air con is rarely used, and a clicking noise from the air-flow mode actuator when changing vents. On the DJ, a refrigerant leak or a failing blower motor is the more common suggestion, and some owners note a musty smell from the vents. A regas and leak test is roughly $150 to $300; a compressor costs $1,000 or more fitted.
Paint chips and early rust spots (DE, 2007 to 2014)
Some DE owners report paint flaking and chipping, and there are isolated reports of premature rust. Check the bonnet leading edge, door edges, sills and wheel arches, and treat stone chips before they spread. Touch-up and rust repair on a single panel is roughly $300 to $800; a full respray costs much more.
Warning lights and electronics glitches (DJ, 2015 to 2023)
A handful of DJ owners report driver-assist warning lights that flash for no reason, a car dropping into a reduced-power safe mode with several warning lights on, and Bluetooth or MZD Connect screens that freeze or switch off. Many of these are software or sensor faults a dealer can diagnose with a scan. Costs range from a software update to several hundred dollars for a new sensor, and more for a screen. If a car has had intermittent warning lights, ask for the dealer job cards.
Recalls and safety
Mazda2 recalls span all three generations. DY: a headlight switch fault (2003) and, on 2005 to 2007 autos, a high idle that could reduce brake assist. DE: Takata front airbag inflators on specific VIN ranges (2016), seat height lifter links on cars sold to March 2012, and front strut bolts that may not have been tightened on some 2013 to 2014 cars. DJ and DL: a fuel tank weld that could leak (2015 to 2016), a parking brake that could let the car roll on a slope (2016 to 2018), a fuel tank strap fault (2018 to 2019) and a low-pressure fuel pump that could stall 2017 to 2019 cars. Make sure the Takata work is done on any DE. Ask a Mazda dealer to check the VIN for open recalls, and see our recalls page.
Buying a used Mazda 2? What to check
- Takata airbag: On a DE, ask for proof the airbag recall was done, or have a dealer confirm it from the VIN.
- Idle: Let the engine idle warm with the air con on. It should hold steady without dipping or stalling.
- Rear bearings: On a smooth road at 60 to 80 km/h, listen for a rumble from the rear that changes with speed.
- Auto shifts: Check the auto engages Drive and Reverse promptly and shifts smoothly, and ask when the fluid was last changed.
- Air con: Run it on max. It should blow cold within a few minutes, with no clicking from the dash when you change vents.
- Paint and rust: Look at the bonnet edge, door edges, sills and wheel arches for chips and bubbling.
- Parking brake: On a DJ or DL, park on a slope and check the handbrake holds firmly. Confirm the parking brake recall was done on 2016 to 2018 cars.
- Electronics: On a DJ, watch for warning lights on the test drive and pair your phone with the screen.

The verdict
The DJ (2014 on) is the best used Mazda2: more efficient, better equipped and, from the 2017 update, fitted with autonomous emergency braking as standard. Prefer a 2017 or later car with its recalls done. A DE makes a cheap, durable first car if the Takata airbag recall is done, it has been serviced regularly and the rear bearings and paint are sound; our 2010 Mazda2 page covers one of its most common years. DY cars are now old, so judge them on condition and history alone. No generation has a widely reported engine design fault.
