Money owing and write-offs on the Picanto
Of about 120 used Kia Picanto checked on Carify since November 2023. Every car checked: 9% had money owing and 13% were written off.
These are cars people chose to check before buying, so they are not a share of every Picanto on the road. Money owing is what was registered against the car on the day it was checked.
Check a Picanto for money owing and write-offsThe Kia Picanto is Kia's smallest car, a five-door city hatch. The TA (2016 to 2017) came here only as the Si, with a 1.25-litre Kappa MPi four-cylinder (G4LA) and a four-speed automatic. The JA (from 2017) keeps that engine with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic, and from 2019 added the GT with a 1.0-litre T-GDi turbo three-cylinder (G3LC) and a five-speed manual. The JA has since been updated twice (around 2021 and 2024), and the latest range is 1.25 only. The Picanto has one of the cleaner records among small cars, with few documented faults. Most owner complaints are about the four-speed automatic, phone connection and small noises, so a careful test drive covers most of the risk.
Four-speed automatic hunting and slow on hills (1.25 Kappa MPi, 2016 to 2026)
Every automatic Picanto uses an old-style four-speed gearbox. Many owners say it hunts between second and third on inclines, holds gears for a long time and leaves the car short of power with passengers or luggage on board. Reviewers of both the TA and JA say the same: the 1.25 is coarse above about 4,000 rpm and the four-speed limits it.
This is the gearbox design rather than a failure, and we found no pattern of automatic breakdowns. Still, a harsh or delayed shift, slipping or a flare in revs is not normal. Ask whether the fluid has been changed on a high-kilometre car, which is roughly $200 to $350. If most of your driving is hills or motorway, the manual is the better car.
Phone mirroring and screen drop-outs (JA, 2017 to 2026)
Another frequent owner complaint is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, particularly the wireless versions on later cars. Owners report connections that fail on the drive home, drop out repeatedly, or only behave after Bluetooth media playback is turned off. Others report it works well, so it varies by phone and software version.
Start with a head unit software update at a Kia dealer, which is free under warranty, and try a good-quality cable on cars with wired mirroring. A replacement head unit out of warranty could cost $800 or more, so check it works with your phone before you buy.
Hard-to-select reverse and clutch feel (manual, 2017 to 2026)
A review of the JA notes reports of difficulty engaging reverse in the manual, and a clutch pedal that sits close to the footrest. Reverse that crunches or refuses to engage can simply be technique, since it needs a full clutch press and a pause, but it can also point to a dragging clutch or worn gearbox internals on a car that has been driven hard.
A clutch replacement on a Picanto is a moderate job, roughly $900 to $1,500 at an independent workshop. A clutch that bites very high, slips in third gear under load or smells hot is near the end of its life. GT turbo cars are often driven harder, so check their clutch closely.
Brake, suspension and cabin noises (JA, 2017 to 2026)
Some owners report grinding or groaning brakes at low speed, creaking or squeaking suspension when getting in and out, and rattles from the sun visors and trim. Dealers have sometimes found nothing wrong. One 2019 GT owner reported ABS and brake light faults that were fixed under warranty.
These are rarely serious, but they cost money to chase. Front pads and rotors on a Picanto are roughly $300 to $500 fitted. Worn suspension links or bushes are typically a few hundred dollars. Any ABS or brake warning light needs a proper scan before you buy.
Recalls and safety
One Picanto recall covered 2020 to 2022 updated JA models, where the warning tone did not sound if the rear fog lamp was left on with the ignition off and the driver's door open. The fix is an instrument cluster software update. Have a Kia dealer check the VIN for open recalls, and see our recalls page.
Buying a used Kia Picanto? What to check
- Automatic shifts: Drive an automatic up a hill and through town. It will hold gears, but it should not slip, flare or thump into gear.
- Reverse and clutch: On a manual, select reverse several times from a stop and check the clutch bites in the middle of the pedal travel.
- Phone connection: Pair your own phone and run CarPlay or Android Auto for the whole drive.
- Brakes: Listen for grinding at low speed and make sure no ABS or brake warning light stays on.
- Suspension noise: Drive over speed bumps with the window down and listen for knocks, creaks or rattles.
- Cooling: Watch the temperature gauge in traffic and check the coolant level, since at least one owner reported overheating after the warranty ended.
- Body damage: City cars pick up scrapes and car park knocks, so check bumpers, wheels and panel gaps closely.
- Service record: Look for regular servicing with receipts. Kia's seven-year warranty passes to the next owner and still covers many JA cars.
Before you buy, run a PPSR check for money owing or a write-off record, and work through our Kia Picanto buying checklist.
The verdict
Almost any Picanto with a clean history is a reasonable buy, because the mechanicals are simple and documented faults are few. The best pick is a 2021 or later updated JA, which is newer and has plenty of warranty left. Choose the manual if you drive on hills or highways; the four-speed automatic is fine in town but tiring elsewhere. The GT turbo is the most fun, but check its clutch and service history closely. The TA is cheap and simple, but it is now old enough that condition matters most.
