Money owing and write-offs on the Carnival

19% had money owing
10% were recorded as written off

Of about 230 used Kia Carnival checked on Carify since November 2023. Every car checked: 9% had money owing and 13% were written off.

These are cars people chose to check before buying, so they are not a share of every Carnival on the road. Money owing is what was registered against the car on the day it was checked.

Check a Carnival for money owing and write-offs

The Kia Carnival is an eight-seat people mover, and used buyers meet three generations. The VQ Grand Carnival (2006 to 2014) was the long-wheelbase model, with a 3.8 V6, then a 3.5 V6 and six-speed auto from 2010, and later a 2.2 R-series diesel. The YP Carnival (2015 to 2020) used a 3.3 GDi V6 (G6DH) or the 2.2 CRDi diesel (D4HB), with a six-speed auto at first and an eight-speed from the 2018 models. The KA4 (from early 2021) has a 3.5 V6 or a 2.2 Smartstream diesel, both with eight-speed autos, and the 2024 facelift added a 1.6 turbo hybrid. Carnivals are tough, practical family cars; most complaints are about electronics, sliding doors and a long list of recalls.

Oil use and engine wear (3.3 GDi V6, YP 2015 to 2020)

Some YP owners report high oil use, and a few report engine failure at high kilometres. In the US, where this generation was sold as the Sedona with the same 3.3 GDi V6, engine failure after the oil ran low is the most reported complaint on 2015 and 2016 cars. The early warning is an oil level that drops between services, sometimes with a tapping noise or an oil light at idle. A compression and leak-down test will show whether the rings or bores are worn. Check the oil often, because a failed engine can cost many thousands of dollars to replace.

Sliding door faults (KA4, 2021 to 2024)

The power sliding doors are a common KA4 annoyance. Kia recalled some 2021 cars because the right-hand sliding door latch might not engage, so the door could open while driving. A later software recall covered 2020 to 2023 cars whose power doors might not warn occupants while moving. Some owners also report power door faults that took several dealer visits to fix. Outside warranty, a sliding door motor or latch repair could run to $1,000 or more.

Screen failures and flat batteries (KA4, 2021 to 2025)

Infotainment screen failures are a frequent owner complaint on the KA4, usually fixed under warranty, though some owners waited weeks for parts. Some owners also report flat 12-volt batteries, with heavy power door use suspected, plus faulty rear seatbelt buckles and warnings that will not switch off. Some 2025-built cars were recalled because the instrument cluster screen could go blank or respond slowly.

Stalling, power loss and turbo faults (2.2 diesel, KA4 2021 to 2024)

Kia recalled 2023 diesel Carnivals because a poorly made engine wiring harness could break the connection to the crankshaft position sensor, causing loss of power or stalling. A small number of owners also report turbo failures. Like any modern diesel, the 2.2 has a particulate filter that clogs on short trips, which can bring up a warning and limp mode. A workshop forced regeneration costs roughly a few hundred dollars; a turbo replacement outside warranty can cost several thousand.

Rust on the rear cross member and lower arms (VQ Grand Carnival, 2006 to 2012 builds)

A Kia bulletin covers rust on the rear cross member and rear lower control arms of cars built from late 2005 to August 2012. The fix was cleaning, cavity wax and underbody coating. On a car that missed the treatment, put it on a hoist: surface rust can be treated, but deep corrosion means replacement arms or a cross member and possibly a roadworthy fail.

Oil leaks onto the coil packs (VQ V6, 2007 to 2014)

Some owners of older V6 Grand Carnivals report rocker cover gaskets that harden with age and leak oil. The oil can reach the spark plug wells and coil packs, causing misfires and a rough idle. Replacing the gaskets is a common job, roughly a few hundred dollars, plus any coil packs the oil has damaged. Early 2006 to 2007 V6s also had a bulletin for timing chain tensioner rattle after warm-up.

Recalls and safety

The YP has a long recall list: brake booster faults that could make the pedal hard (2015 and 2017 cars), airbag control units that might not deploy the airbags (2016 to 2018), a loose alternator terminal that could start an engine bay fire (2019 to 2020), a wrongly fitted second-row centre seatbelt buckle (2019), turn signals flashing the wrong way, and a shift lock that could let the selector leave Park without the brake. The KA4 was recalled for fuel leaks at the supply pipe and a fuel line hose clamp, and 2024 facelift cars for a wiring harness that could rub on the steering shaft and cut power steering assistance. VQ cars had recalls for an ABS module that could short and catch fire when parked, a petrol fuel rail that could crack, and a stop lamp switch fault. Have a Kia dealer check the VIN for open recalls, and see our recalls page.

Buying a used Kia Carnival? What to check

  • Sliding doors: Open and close both sliding doors several times by button, key and handle. They should run smoothly, latch fully and stop when obstructed.
  • Oil level: On a YP V6, check the dipstick and ask how often it needs topping up. Listen for tapping at idle.
  • Screens and electrics: Test the touchscreen, phone mirroring, cameras, instrument cluster and every seatbelt warning.
  • Battery health: Ask whether the 12-volt battery has gone flat, and have it load tested.
  • Diesel running: Look for smooth power with no stalling, turbo whistle or DPF warning, and ask how the car is usually driven.
  • Underbody rust: On a VQ Grand Carnival, inspect the rear cross member, lower arms and sills on a hoist.
  • Recall record: Ask for proof of recall work, especially the airbag unit on 2016 to 2018 YPs and the steering harness on 2024 cars.
  • Service history: Many Carnivals have done years of hard family duty, so check the logbook and compare the kilometres with the wear on seats, doors and carpets.

Run a Carify VIN check before you buy, and use our Kia Carnival buying checklist on the inspection.

The verdict

A KA4 is the pick if the budget allows, as most are still inside Kia's seven-year warranty. The 3.5 V6 is the simpler choice for mostly suburban driving; the diesel suits towing and long trips. Test the sliding doors and screens carefully, and confirm the recall work. A late YP with the eight-speed auto is good value if the oil use is normal and the airbag recall is done. Treat an older VQ Grand Carnival as a budget buy: check for rear rust and oil leaks, and budget for age-related repairs.
