Before buying a used car, check the PPSR
Buying a used car? Seek out trustworthy advice no matter what you decide to do. Do a quick PPSR check.
Buying a used car in Tasmania? Run an instant PPSR check by rego or VIN and get your Carify Vehicle History Report with the official Australian Government PPSR (REVS) certificate.
Your TAS PPSR Check Report Includes:
The PPSR is a single national register, so a PPSR check covers any vehicle in Australia, including one registered in Tasmania. In Tasmania, vehicle registration and the Written-Off Vehicles Register are managed by Transport Services. Written-off records are shared through the national system known as NEVDIS (the National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System), which the PPSR draws on when you run a search. Stolen-vehicle records are the exception in Tasmania, as explained below.
That means a Carify PPSR check shows you finance owing, write-off history and odometer readings for a Tasmania car in one report, along with the official government PPSR certificate. You can also confirm registration details directly with Service Tasmania on the Transport Services website.
Important for Tasmania: a PPSR check cannot tell you whether a car is recorded as stolen. Tasmania does not share stolen-vehicle records with the national NEVDIS system that the PPSR relies on, so stolen status is the one check a PPSR report leaves blank for Tasmanian vehicles. You can check it for free on the Tasmanian Government transport site (transport.tas.gov.au). Every other check, including finance owing, write-off, odometer and safety recalls, works as normal.
The official government PPSR search costs $2 and tells you about finance owing, write-off and stolen status. A full Carify report includes that official PPSR certificate plus the odometer and market valuation, a visual written-off damage report and every safety recall. See the full breakdown on our PPSR check page.
Mostly no, with one exception. Finance, write-off, odometer and recall checks work the same in Tasmania as anywhere else. The exception is stolen status: Tasmania does not share stolen-vehicle records with the national NEVDIS system, so a PPSR check cannot show whether a Tasmanian car is recorded as stolen. You can check that for free with Service Tasmania.
The official government PPSR search is $2. A full Carify report costs more because it adds the odometer and valuation comparison, a visual written-off damage report and every safety recall on top of the official PPSR certificate.
A PPSR check and a rego check answer different questions. The PPSR check covers finance, write-off and stolen status. A TAS rego check confirms the vehicle's registration status and expiry. It is worth doing both before you buy.
