Reduce your risk of becoming a victim of car theft

Are you worried about being a victim of car theft? Well, according to our research, many different factors influence the risk. We have compiled some recent statistics on how easy it is for cars in Australia to get taken and ran our analysis to find out more information.

Car theft

Recent research from the Insurance Bureau suggests one in every 120 Australian homes fall victim, each year.

New statistics show that 7 in 10 cars are stolen with the offender's keys. In addition, offenders will sneak into homes by taking advantage of unlocked doors and windows. So make sure you take those keys out of sight.

The theft of vehicles is a growing problem. 77% of cars are stolen for short term purposes, not involving its value which may range from joyriding or for use in the commission of another crime.

The average victim of car theft is out $5,000, and the stress isn't worth it if you're dealing with insurance companies who don't always cover all costs.

What can you do?

It's important not to hide the second set of keys anywhere in your car. Thieves know where people put their valuables, so don't make it easy on them.

Don't tag your keys with a name or address – use the phone number for yourself and put "driver's license" as an alternate.

Don't leave your car unattended with the key in the ignition. When leaving your vehicle unattended, make sure to close all windows and lock doors. Also, take the keys with you.

Thieves are on the lookout for anything that they think is valuable. So never leave your mobile phone, bag or laptop insight while you're away from it.

Tips for owners of older cars

Older cars are not equipped with the security features of newer vehicles, such as an engine immobiliser, which makes them a favourite target for thieves. They also make it easier than ever before thanks to simple tools like coat hangers and screwdrivers that can be used by young people looking to want some fun or quick mode transport. Thankfully there's still hope: reduce risk by following these steps below…

Do you want to protect your car from being hot-wired? If so, fit an after-market engine immobiliser. It's a simple and inexpensive process that will keep thieves out.

It would help if you considered installing a vehicle tracker. Today's inexpensive GPS tracking systems can be purchased online. Make sure you know exactly what features the best suit your needs and budget.

Careful sales approach Clever criminals are using online services to pose as legitimate buyers.  The general rule here? Don't hand over your keys unless you have proof of identity, like a driver license in this case.

Enhance your home's security. With a secure home, you can rest easy knowing that your car will be safe too.
